David trained as a physicist, obtaining a D.Phil from Oxford University before starting his career first as a research scientist. David’s long and wide-ranging career includes many senior roles in the public and private sector, including as former Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit under Prime Minister Tony Blair. David also spent several years as Chairman and Chief Executive of Monitor where he was responsible for the economic regulation of the health sector and for overseeing around two thirds of NHS trusts with a combined £46bn turnover. As a result, he has extensive knowledge of the Health and Social Care systems. Since leaving Monitor David has worked with a number of businesses that are seeking to help the NHS deliver better services to its users. In these and other roles David has gained significant hands on and board-level experience of building, re-structuring and running a variety of businesses. David became chairman of Virgin Care in October 2019, however, he still retains a close interest in science and technology. Since his work in No.10 and Monitor, he has become very interested in how innovation - in processes and systems as well as technology - can be used to deliver better healthcare for people.
Michael attended Lincoln College at the University of Oxford, where he attained a BA Hons. (distinction) and MA. Michael has extensive Non-Executive experience in the Social and Health Care sectors, following an Executive career in financial services, tourism and transport, including a top management position at Delta Air Lines Inc., Chief Executive of the British Tourist Authority and Transaction Director at Nomura’s Principal Finance Group. He served as Non-Executive Director on the Boards of Manchester Airports Group, National Savings & Investments and the Civil Aviation Authority among others. Michael was appointed as Non-Executive Director to the Virgin Care Board in December 2015, bringing deep experience in corporate governance. Michael is currently Non-Executive Chairman at Caring Homes Healthcare Group and at Myriad Holdco, Ltd. Among his many interests are Fellowships of three Royal Societies, languages, horticulture and travelling in perfect company with his wife, Susan.
Dr Vivienne McVey
Chief Executive Officer
One of the founders of the business, Dr McVey qualified in medicine at the University of Cambridge and she began her career in 1986 as a GP in London and Beaconsfield. She went on to become chair of the Professional Executive Committee of her PCT, a front runner in developing practice based commissioning and new ways of delivering health services in the community. Vivienne has overseen the growth of Virgin Care since it began and has most recently led our national transformation programme. Dr McVey has been a member of the Virgin Healthcare Holdings board since 2011.
Chief Financial Officer
David has a proven track record in finance management, business development and corporate strategy within the healthcare sector. He started his career in the healthcare industry over twelve years ago, beginning as a consultant and providing service redesign and commissioning expertise to the NHS. David joined Virgin Care as Head of Business Development in 2009, having had the central role in developing and executing the strategy for the growth of the business. Some of his key accomplishments include winning over £900million revenue from NHS contracts as well as being awarded Virgin Care Star of the Year in 2012. After working for the largest healthcare service provider in the UAE for five years, David re-joined Virgin Care in 2018 as Director of Commercial Finance, with the responsibility of overseeing the commercial performance of all Virgin Care services. At present, David is Virgin Care’s Chief Financial Officer, overseeing property, procurement, group finance, as well as commercial finance, legal, corporate governance and contract management.
Anita studied law at the University of Cambridge and Nottingham Law School before qualifying as a solicitor in 2003. Prior to joining Virgin, Anita worked as a corporate lawyer at Herbert Smith Freehills. Anita is a non-executive director to the Virgin Care Board and Legal Director at the Virgin Group. She has been with Virgin since 2008 and is responsible for protecting and enhancing Virgin’s portfolio and reputation by advising on a broad range of strategic matters and pursuing Virgin’s purpose of changing business for good.
Caroline is a non-executive director of Virgin Care and a Managing Director at the Virgin Group. She has a degree in mathematics from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from The Wharton School. Prior to joining the Virgin Group, Caroline worked in M&A at Goldman Sachs and prior to that as a consultant at OC&C Strategy Consultants. Caroline joined the Virgin Group in 2009 and is responsible for investment execution and portfolio management. Caroline’s current board positions include Virgin Active, Virgin Mobile Middle East and Virgin Care.
